As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries and regions have introduced quarantines, entry bans or other restrictions on citizens or recent arrivals in the hardest hit areas. Other countries and regions have introduced global restrictions that apply to all foreign countries and territories or prevent their citizens from traveling abroad.
Travel restrictions turned ineffective
Along with a decrease in the desire to travel, the restrictions have had a negative economic and social impact on the tourism sector in these regions. A possible long-term impact has been a decrease in the number of business travel and international conferences, as well as an increase in their virtual online equivalents. Concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of travel restrictions in containing the spread of COVID-19.
The European Union has rejected the idea of suspending a free zone along the Schengen route and introducing border controls with Italy, a decision that has been criticized by some European politicians. After some EU member states announced the complete closure of their national borders to foreign citizens, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated that “certain controls may be warranted, but general travel bans are not considered the most effective by the World Health Organization.
A few days later, the EU closed its external borders. A study by Science found that travel restrictions had only a modest effect, delaying the initial spread of COVID-19, unless they were combined with infection prevention and control measures to significantly reduce transmission. The researchers concluded that “travel restrictions are most useful in the early and late phases of the epidemic” and “travel restrictions from Wuhan were unfortunately introduced too late.”
